Leica Camera has introduced a next-generation model of its classic M lenses:
the Leica Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH.each delivering enhanced image performance and quality, thanks to their new optical design.

The impressive Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH. fast, classic prime lens delivers superior image performance and a unique bokeh. Despite its high speed and exceptional image quality, its dimensions are astoundingly compact. Furthermore, with its eleven blade iris, this new generation lens creates a circular aperture, lending out of focus areas an extremely smooth look and feel. Images are pin-sharp with rich contrast, and almost completely free from distortion with superb bokeh at all apertures and distances and even when shooting wide open.

The compact APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. pushes the limits of the technology to deliver uncompromising optical performance. With a minimum focusing distance that is rarely found within the M-System, the new lens provides an even greater scope for creativity.

The ten lens elements are divided into five groups; three elements feature aspherical surfaces (one of them on both sides). Six elements are made of glasses with anomalous partial dispersion, which not only reduce chromatic aberrations to almost zero, but also provide apochromatic correction ?a quality that is rarely found in lenses of this focal length.

With the goal of creating a lens that fully exploits the opportunities offered by high-resolution camera systems, Leica?s engineers have successfully redefined the limits of what is technically possible. The result is an extremely high-performance lens that sets entirely new standards, and currently represents exceptional talent amongst the standard lenses of the Leica M portfolio. This new reference lens has achieved the best test results ever seen in the Leica M-Lens programme. The MTF curves of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH., which describe the contrast of fine details and, in turn, the image sharpness, confirm its outstanding performance.

Apochromatic colour correction and an aspherical lens surface are combined for the first time in this lens of this type. Of its five individual elements, two are made of high-refraction glass, while two others feature anomalous partial dispersion. Its brilliance and quality of resolution are exemplary even at full aperture. Light falloff is very low. Its fast aperture, for a 90mm lens, lets you shoot at relatively short exposure times even in dim light, helping to minimise the effects of camera shake, for instance when photographing street scenes from a distance.

This compact, fast, short telephoto lens is acclaimed for its excellent image quality at maximum aperture and over the full focusing range from infinity to minimum distance. The speed of this powerful lens allows to single out a sharp detail on a blurred background. Still, the lens offers a natural angle of view that can not be achieved with 90mm telephoto lenses.

It features aspherical surfaces, special glass types with partial anomalous dispersion and floating elements. Close focus distance up to 0.4 m

Possible by a patent-pending double cam unit newly developed by Leica engineers. As a result, the rotation angle of the focus ring could be almost doubled to 176°in comparison to the previous model – with the same compact size of the lens.

The light and fast Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. Safari Edition expands creative possibilities with its wide-angle field of view and extended close focus distance of 40 centimetres.

This retro edition lens is modelled on a screw mount lens produced at the Leitz factory in Wetzlar from 1955 to 1963. Its unmistakable signature is almost impossible to reproduce by digital means and makes the lens a true classic that is now reborn in a revised edition, with exactly the same optical properties. The fact that this is no simple reconstruction is obvious at first sight: the design of the Summaron-M has been refined down to the essentials, without losing any of the character of its legendary ancestor.

While the exterior design is carefully adapted to complement the contemporary lenses of the M System, the optical design

of the original lens design remains unchanged

Stopping down to f/2.8 or f/4 brings only a minimal increase in contrast. Distortion is extremely low and practically invisible. The intricate optical design and construction of the lens are responsible for its outstanding sharpness and imaging qualities. The Leica Super-Elmar-M 21 mm f/3.4 ASPH. is constructed with eight lenses in seven groups. At the same time, the use of one lens element with two aspherical surfaces and four lenses with anomalous partial dispersion ensure that aberrations are reduced to an absolute minimum.
